The New York Yankees have had a quiet offseason coming out of the 2025 Winter Meetings. While they have not made much noise as of yet, they have made an addition to their roster on Saturday afternoon. Let’s take a closer look at who they added and what it means for the 2026 roster as a whole.
New York Yankees Re-Sign Ahmed Rosario
Ahmed Rosario is heading back to the Bronx to play for the New York Yankees in 2026, per YES Network’s Jack Curry. He signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract for the 2026 season and is expected to be in the mix for the starting shortstop role heading into spring training.
Rosario was limited to 62 games between the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees last season and posted a .745 OPS with six home runs, 23 RBI, 20 runs scored, and one stolen base. Entering his age-30 season, the journeyman infielder showcased an ability to be a league-average hitter and play solid defense at multiple positions.
Rosario has been able to crush left-handed pitchers, posting a .302/.328/.491 slash line in 116 at-bats last season. It is projected he will be in a platoon situation with Jose Caballero opening the season, but it will be intriguing to see if he wins the starting shortstop battle as Anthony Volpe recovers from offseason surgery.
Even if he does not become the starting shortstop, he has experience playing third base and in the outfield. Expect to see him play a few days per week and be a factor as a bench player when the time is needed. With Giancarlo Stanton playing as the designated hitter, he could get some pinch running opportunities as well.
