Alex Ovechkin has his sights set on breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record of 894. Ovechkin hit the 800-goal mark in the 2022-2023 NHL season. He began the 2024-25 season with 853 goals and now has 886. “The Great One” only has 8 more goals before breaking the record. The Washington Capitals only have 17 games left in the regular season.

Alex Ovechkin Set to Break Gretzky’s Record

The NHL season is coming to a close with teams getting down to less than 20 games to wrap up the season before heading into the playoffs to chase the Stanley Cup. Before the season is over there is buzz around Washington Capitals star Ovechkin on breaking Gretzky’s goal record.

He is one of the most distinguished players in the NHL. He is a three-time Hart Trophy for Most Valuable Player winner, has nine Rocket Richard Trophies for most goals scored in a season, and won the 2017 Stanley Cup. It was the first championship in franchise history.
