Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon has reportedly agreed to a new six-year contract, ending speculation about his future amid interest from clubs like Arsenal and Liverpool. The former Everton winger had been heavily linked with a move away from St. James’ Park during the summer, with Liverpool seemingly leading the chase to bring their former academy player back to Anfield.

There were rumours that Anthony Gordon had informed his England teammates during Euro 2024 that a transfer to Liverpool was likely. His potential move to the Reds even impacted his playing time at the tournament, where he made just one appearance as a substitute.

However, despite attempts to negotiate a deal that could have included Joe Gomez heading to Newcastle, Liverpool failed to reach an agreement with the Magpies. Instead, they opted to sign Federico Chiesa from Juventus at a reduced price.

How big a blow is Anthony Gordon’s new deal for Arsenal & Liverpool?

While Liverpool maintained an interest in Anthony Gordon, Arsenal were also rumored to be monitoring the situation closely. However, Newcastle were determined to secure his future, and their efforts have reportedly paid off. According to ‘Football Insider’, Gordon has agreed to a new six-year deal, keeping him at Newcastle until the summer of 2030. His current contract was set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season, but this new agreement extends his stay by four years, with an official announcement expected soon.

This development deals a significant blow to both Arsenal and Liverpool, who would now face a hefty fee if they attempted to sign him in the future. Despite this, Liverpool are still said to admire the 23-year-old winger (Anthony Gordon), though Newcastle do not anticipate serious interest following the successful negotiations.

Since joining Newcastle from Everton in early 2023, Anthony Gordon has registered 15 goals and 11 assists in 72 appearances, including two goals in the current 2024-25 season. While his talent is undeniable, Liverpool may benefit from the opportunity to focus on other priorities. The club is well-stocked on the left wing with Luis Diaz performing brilliantly this season, and Cody Gakpo showing promise under manager Arne Slot.

What’s for Arsenal and Liverpool’s Future

Liverpool can now concentrate on securing new contracts for key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Meanwhile, Arsenal have their own competition for the left-wing position, with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard vying for the starting role. Although Martinelli hasn’t matched his 2022-23 form, his recent performance against Leicester City could reignite his season.

Arsenal already have a promising squad, a team that is a genuine Premier League and even Champions League contender. Considering the form of both these Red elites, they just need to continue the same way they have been doing this season. There are going to be several ups and downs in form of several players and their contracts, one of them now being Anthony Gordon; but that shouldn’t be the problem for any of these two.
