Cam Thomas didn’t hold back in a recent interview about his time with the Brooklyn Nets. Following his release from the Brooklyn Nets at the NBA trade deadline, the prolific scorer has not minced words, offering a raw and revealing look into his frustrating tenure with the team.

In a recent interview, Thomas let his true feelings about the organization be known, providing a blunt assessment of his time in Brooklyn. His comments paint a picture of a player who felt undervalued and a franchise that was “always chasing something” else.

Cam Thomas On The Brooklyn Nets: “They Didn’t Believe”

The saga between Cam Thomas and the Nets has been brewing for some time. After failing to agree on a long-term extension last offseason, Thomas signed a one-year qualifying offer, betting on himself before hitting unrestricted free agency. The relationship appeared to sour further throughout the season.

After recovering from a hamstring injury, Thomas saw his playing time fluctuate, never surpassing 25 minutes in a game upon his return. The final straw reportedly came in a January game against the Boston Celtics, where he was pulled for refusing to shoot a late-shot-clock attempt. The Nets waived him on the day of the trade deadline, a move that allowed him to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks.

When asked by the New York Post why he felt the Nets didn’t believe in him, Thomas was candid.

“They always thought something was better, I guess,” he said. “I don’t know. Always chasing something.”

This statement gets to the heart of Thomas’s frustration. Despite proving he could be an elite scorer—averaging nearly 23 points per game across the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons—he seemingly never earned the full trust of the organization.

A New Start in Milwaukee

Immediately after his release, Thomas made it clear he was ready for a fresh start. “Super excited ready to actually help and contribute to another team,” he told Andscape’s Marc J. Spears. “My next team is getting elite scoring, good playmaking and a good combo guard.”

He backed up those words instantly. In his debut with the Milwaukee Bucks, Thomas exploded for 34 points in just 25 minutes, showcasing the instant offense that made him such a tantalizing, yet perplexing, player in Brooklyn. His performance was a stark reminder of what he can bring to a team that empowers him.

For the Nets, Thomas’s public comments raise questions about the team’s culture and player development. The inability to find a consistent role for a homegrown, explosive talent is a difficult look for a franchise trying to establish a clear identity post-superstar era. His critique that the front office is “always chasing something” could be interpreted as a lack of commitment to the players they already have.

What’s Next for Cam Thomas?

Now with the Bucks, Thomas has a chance to contribute to a championship contender and rebuild his value ahead of unrestricted free agency this summer. He has already shown that, in the right situation, he can be a game-changing offensive weapon off the bench.

Teams across the league will be watching closely. There is no denying his talent for putting the ball in the basket. The primary question for potential suitors will be whether he can channel that scoring prowess into a role that contributes to winning basketball.

For Cam Thomas, the messy divorce from Brooklyn is now in the rearview mirror. He has a new home and an opportunity to prove that the Nets made a mistake. Based on his comments, he’s more motivated than ever to do just that.
