Charlie Cooper Shines at US Open Junior Wheelchair Championships

Thursday proved a banner day for 16-year-old Californian Charlie Cooper at the 2024 US Open Junior Wheelchair Championships. First, he did the unthinkable by reaching two finals in one day. Then he pulled off excellent wins over the number one seeds in both events. This was a day that showed his talent and drive on the big stage.

Knocking Off the Top Seed

Cooper Charlie’s day started on Court 13 in a thrilling singles semifinal. Against the No. 1 seed, Maximilian Taucher, Cooper, came out on top 6-2, 6-3. It was a sweet victory, as he now avenges his 0-3 record against the Austrian. Dominant in nearly every fashion, Charlie Cooper hit 23 winners to Taucher’s 14. From the beginning of the first point, it seemed Cooper was on a mission.

With the singles win, Charlie booked a spot in the finals against No. 2 seed Ivar van Rijt. Van Rijt had advanced to the final after defeating Aussie Jin Woodman in a tight three-set match. Charlie Cooper’s play during the semifinal was evidence of how much better his game was getting and just how ready he would be for the task ahead.

Doubles Success

Later in the day, Charlie Cooper paired with one of his best friends, Tomas Majetic for a semifinal doubles match against Taucher. In the doubles contest, Charlie Cooper and Majetic came away with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Taucher and Ruben Harris. The chemistry was apparent in their dominating display of teamwork.

It’s been an especially good year for the Cooper-Majetic partnership. They were part of the U.S. team that finally broke through for a win at the World Team Cup after a long period. The tournament is wheelchair tennis’s version of the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup combined. The U.S. won its fifth title. A large part of it had to do with how well Cooper and Majetic clicked.

Charlie Cooper’s Inspiring Journey

Cooper spoke of his close relationship with Majetic. The closeness they share is more on the court and helps the two be there at every turn for each other in their matches. In his own words, he said it has come in very handy in moral boosting and understanding of game styles. Both are attacking-minded players who love the pace of the game.

With the top players fiercely contending for the title, it has been all excitement for Cooper as he readies for the final. His performances have built high expectations among the fans as they wait to see how he will compete in the final matches.

Events such as the US Open Junior Wheelchair Championships have brought into the limelight young brilliant talents such as Charlie Cooper.
