The NFL Draft season is in full swing, and for Chicago Bears fans, the speculation is running wild. With clear needs on the defensive side of the ball, every new mock draft from a major analyst is scrutinized. The latest projection from ESPN’s draft guru, Mel Kiper, is no exception, and it’s one that should have Bears fans excited about strengthening the trenches.

In his pre-combine mock draft, Kiper projects the Chicago Bears will select Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald. This pick directly addresses one of the team’s most significant weaknesses and aligns with what many believe should be a top priority for general manager Ryan Poles.

Chicago Bears: The Perfect Pick for a Pressing Need

The Bears’ defensive struggles in 2025 were well-documented, particularly their inability to stop the run. The team allowed a dismal 5.0 yards per carry, which ranked fourth-worst in the entire league. While the addition of Grady Jarrett in free agency was meant to shore up the interior, it didn’t produce the expected results, and he will be 33 by the time next season starts.

Kiper’s reasoning for the Kayden McDonald pick is straightforward and logical. He notes that while edge rusher is a need, the top prospects at that position might not be available when the Bears are on the clock. Instead of reaching, he has Chicago taking the best player at a position of need.

“McDonald is actually the DT1 on my Big Board, and he has a nose for the football,” Kiper wrote. “Having him on the interior would be huge for a Bears team that allowed 5.0 yards per carry last season.”

Who is Kayden McDonald?

For those unfamiliar with the Ohio State standout, Kayden McDonald is a dominant force. He was a consensus All-American during his time with the Buckeyes and was named the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year. His production speaks for itself: in 2025, he racked up 65 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and three sacks.

McDonald is more than just a space-eater; he is a disruptive playmaker. His 17 run stops in 2025, as noted by Kiper, show his ability to penetrate the backfield and blow up plays before they can get started. Pairing him with Gervon Dexter Sr., who is entering the final year of his contract, would give the Bears a formidable young duo on the interior defensive line for years to come.

A Smart Strategy for the NFL Draft 2026

While many in the fanbase are clamoring for a top-tier edge rusher, the strategy of solidifying the defensive tackle position in the draft is sound. Elite pass rushers are often acquired via trade or big-ticket free agent signings. The hope for the Bears is that they can land a proven veteran like Trey Hendrickson or Maxx Crosby before the draft even begins.

If Poles can successfully add an established edge threat in free agency, it frees up the team to take the best defensive player available in the draft. In this scenario, selecting Kayden McDonald would be a home run. It addresses a critical need with a blue-chip prospect, providing an immediate upgrade to the run defense and adding a player with the potential to develop into an elite interior pass rusher.

As the NFL Combine approaches, draft boards will continue to shift. But for now, Mel Kiper’s mock draft provides a clear and exciting vision for how the Chicago Bears can begin to rebuild their defense from the inside out.
