Matas Buzelis, the second-year forward for the Chicago Bulls, has high expectations for his sophomore season. But here’s the thing about becoming “the guy”—it doesn’t happen overnight. And Buzelis, smarter than his 21 years might suggest, seems to get that.

He isn’t trying to force the issue. He’s not hijacking the Chicago Bulls’ offense or hunting for his shot on every possession. Instead, he’s letting the game come to him, and in doing so, he’s showing the maturity that separates good players from great ones.

How Buzelis Impacts Winning

Early this season, Buzelis has been the ultimate glue guy, doing the dirty work that doesn’t always show up in the box score but is essential for winning basketball. He’s crashing the boards, making the extra pass, and locking in on defense. When his shot isn’t falling, he doesn’t pout; he finds other ways to make his presence felt.

It’s this team-first mentality that has earned him the trust of head coach Billy Donovan. While Donovan is quick to temper expectations, even he can’t deny the forward’s work ethic and basketball IQ. Buzelis understands that in today’s NBA, it’s about being a winning player first. Stardom is a byproduct of that. If it’s his night to score, he’ll take it. If not, he’s perfectly content setting a hard screen or diving for a loose ball.

Stepping Up When It Matters

With Coby White sidelined, the Chicago Bulls need someone to step up offensively, and Buzelis has quietly answered the call. He isn’t forcing shots, but he’s picking his spots with veteran-like savvy. He’s shown an improved ability to attack the rim and has become a more reliable option in the pick-and-roll.

His performance against the Detroit Pistons was a perfect example. He finished with 21 points, but it was his timely, thunderous dunks that shifted the momentum and energized the United Center. When the game was on the line, he didn’t shy away from the moment. He rose to it—literally. He’s proving that he’s not just a prospect with potential; he’s a player who can make a real difference right now.

The journey to becoming a star is a marathon, not a sprint. Matas Buzelis is taking it one game at a time, building his case not with empty stats, but with winning plays. For the Chicago Bulls and their long-suffering fans, that’s a sight for sore eyes.
