Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes reached another career milestone during Monday night’s 28-7 victory over the Washington Commanders, becoming just the second player in NFL history to eclipse 40,000 passing yards in their first nine seasons, including playoffs.

A Rare Achievement

Mahomes joined the exclusive club with Hall of Famer Peyton Manning when he connected with wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster for a five-yard gain in the second quarter. The completion pushed Mahomes past the 40,000-yard threshold, cementing his place among the game’s all-time greats.

Manning accumulated 41,082 passing yards over his first nine seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Mahomes now sits at 40,000 yards and counting, with 34,152 yards in regular season play and 5,814 in the postseason.

The achievement carries added weight when considering the championships. While Manning won one Super Bowl during that span, Mahomes has captured three Lombardi Trophies.

Bouncing Back from Early Struggles

The record-setting night didn’t start smoothly for Mahomes. He threw interceptions on Kansas City’s first two possessions, though the second wasn’t entirely his fault. The Chiefs’ signal-caller quickly regained his composure, leading a touchdown drive on the team’s third possession.

Mahomes finished the game completing 25 of 34 passes for 299 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He posted a 104.9 passer rating while adding 30 rushing yards on four attempts.

His ability to extend plays with his legs was on full display throughout the contest, buying extra time for receivers to get open and creating opportunities when the pocket collapsed.

Chiefs Roll in Second Half

After a sluggish first half that ended tied 7-7, Kansas City dominated the final two quarters. The Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points, with Mahomes directing three consecutive touchdown drives to break the game open.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice continued his strong play since returning from a six-game suspension, hauling in nine catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Rice has recorded 16 receptions, 135 receiving yards and three touchdowns in just two games back.

Tight end Travis Kelce also made history during the victory, catching a 10-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes in the third quarter. The score was Kelce’s 83rd career touchdown, tying Priest Holmes for the most in franchise history.

Running back Kareem Hunt proved to be a constant threat in the red zone, scoring both a rushing and receiving touchdown. He finished with 40 yards on the ground.

Looking Ahead

The victory improved Kansas City’s record to 5-3 on the season, marking their third consecutive win. The Chiefs have won five of their last six games after an 0-2 start and now sit tied with the Los Angeles Chargers for second place in the AFC West. They trail the Denver Broncos by just one game in the loss column.

Kansas City’s offensive line deserves credit for the performance, especially considering they played without starting guard Trey Smith (back) and rookie left tackle Josh Simmons (personal reasons). Mahomes had ample time to throw and faced minimal pressure throughout the night.

The Chiefs will face their toughest test yet when they travel to Buffalo in Week 9 for an AFC Championship rematch against Josh Allen and the Bills.

As Mahomes continues to rewrite the record books, his latest milestone serves as another reminder of his exceptional talent and consistency. With plenty of football left in his career, the question isn’t whether he’ll surpass Manning’s nine-year total, but by how much.
