The Dallas Cowboys have made a decisive move to solidify their backfield, locking down running back Javonte Williams with a new multi-year contract. The team announced on Saturday, February 21, that they have agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal with the standout running back, preventing him from hitting the open market.

The agreement sends a clear message about how highly the Cowboys value Williams’ contribution to their offense. After a season that saw him re-establish himself as a premier back, Dallas has rewarded him with a contract that reflects his importance to their success.

Dallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams: Details of the New Contract

The three-year deal is worth a total of $24 million, carrying an average annual value of $8 million. Crucially, the contract includes $16 million in guaranteed money, providing significant security for Williams and demonstrating the team’s long-term commitment.

This signing is a major win for both sides. For Williams, it represents a significant payday after he played the 2025 season on a one-year, $3 million “prove-it” deal. He bet on himself and won in a big way. For the Cowboys, it secures their lead back for the foreseeable future and removes a major question mark heading into the offseason.

A Career Year for Williams

Williams joined the Cowboys last offseason after spending his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos. He was looking for an opportunity to be a featured back, and he found the perfect fit in Dallas’s high-powered offense.

The 2025 season was a resounding success for Williams, who delivered career-best numbers across the board. He rushed for 1,201 yards on 252 carries, averaging an impressive 4.8 yards per attempt. He was a force in the red zone, punching in 11 rushing touchdowns, also a career-high. Williams also proved to be a reliable option in the passing game, catching 35 passes for 137 yards and two additional scores.

His powerful, downhill running style was a perfect complement to the Cowboys’ offensive line, and he consistently demonstrated the ability to break tackles and gain tough yardage. This performance made his re-signing a top priority for the front office.

What This Means for the Cowboys’ Offense

With Javonte Williams back in the fold, the Cowboys maintain a key piece of their offensive identity. His return ensures stability in the running game, which is critical for balancing the offense and taking pressure off the passing attack.

The Cowboys’ offense was at its best last season when it could control the clock and wear down opposing defenses with a physical ground game. Williams was central to that strategy. His ability to handle a heavy workload allows Dallas to stick to their game plan and dictate the tempo of games.

By locking up Williams now, the Cowboys can shift their focus to other offseason priorities, such as retaining star wide receiver George Pickens. The backfield is secure, and Dallas can now work on keeping their other offensive weapons in town as they build toward another championship run.
