Former Detroit Lions QB Cut By Panthers; NFL Career In Jeopardy

Detroit Lions- Hendon Hooker

The NFL journey for former Detroit Lions third round pick Hendon Hooker has taken another challenging turn, as the Carolina Panthers have released the quarterback from their practice squad. For a player who was once a highly regarded draft prospect, the move raises serious questions about his future in the league and whether his promising collegiate career will ever translate to the professional level.

Hendon Hooker: From Detroit Lions Draft Darling to Roster Casualty

Hooker’s path has been a difficult one since entering the NFL. After a stellar career at Tennessee, he was selected in the third round by the Detroit Lions, who viewed him as a potential developmental quarterback behind starter Jared Goff. However, Hooker struggled to gain a foothold in Detroit. His inconsistency during training camp and preseason games failed to inspire confidence from the coaching staff.

The writing was on the wall when the Lions opted to sign veteran Kyle Allen to be Goff’s primary backup for the 2025 season. Hooker was ultimately cut before the season began. He landed on the Panthers’ practice squad, hoping for a fresh start and a chance to learn under coach Dave Canales, with whom he had developed a bond during the pre-draft process. Unfortunately, that opportunity has now been cut short.

An Uneventful Pro Career

To date, Hooker’s time in the NFL has been uneventful. He was unable to earn the trust of the Lions’ coaching staff, a fact underscored when the team brought in Teddy Bridgewater as the emergency backup for their playoff run last year, despite Bridgewater being out of the league for most of the season.

His brief stint in Carolina was meant to be a developmental period, a chance to refine his skills and learn a new system. His release from the practice squad suggests that either the team was not seeing the desired progress or that they needed the roster spot for other positions. Regardless of the reason, being let go from a second team in a short period is a significant setback.

What Does the Future Hold?

At 27, time is still on Hooker’s side, but his options may be dwindling. His draft pedigree will likely earn him another look from a team willing to take a chance on his talent, perhaps on another practice squad. However, he will need to demonstrate significant improvement and prove that he can adapt to the speed and complexity of the NFL game.

The talent that made him a star at Tennessee is undeniable, but the transition to the pros has been rough. The next stop for Hendon Hooker will be critical. It may be his last, best chance to prove that he belongs in the league and can revive a career that once held so much promise.
