Detroit Pistons JB Bickerstaff On Last Night’s Victory: “One Of The Fun Ones”

The Detroit Pistons faced what looked like an insurmountable challenge on Wednesday night, taking the court against the Chicago Bulls without a staggering seven players, including most of their starting lineup. Yet, in a powerful display of resilience and team chemistry, Detroit secured a dominant 124-113 victory. After the game, head coach JB Bickerstaff praised his team’s ability to rise to the occasion.

With key contributors like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Tobias Harris, and Isaiah Stewart sidelined, the Detroit Pistons relied on their depth. Rather than viewing the situation as a disadvantage, Bickerstaff embraced the challenge it presented.

“I mean, these are the fun ones. I’ll be honest with you. These are games that I do enjoy,” Bickerstaff shared with the media. “When a lot of people say, ‘you can’t,’ the challenge of accepting that is always fun.”

He was quick to point out that the foundation for such a victory wasn’t built overnight. He credited the cohesiveness and chemistry developed since the summer as the reason the team could step up. “What’s brewing in that locker room is special,” he explained.

A “Next Man Up” Victory

The players who stepped into larger roles proved their coach right. The starting lineup featured new faces like Daniss Jenkins, Ron Holland, Javonte Green, and Paul Reed, with Duncan Robinson as the only regular starter. The reshuffled group didn’t miss a beat, never surrendering the lead and building a 23-point advantage in the first half.

Paul Reed was phenomenal, leading all scorers with a season-high 28 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. Duncan Robinson also set a season-high with 23 points, while rookie Daniss Jenkins recorded his first career double-double with 18 points and 12 assists. The team’s performance, marked by 30 assists on 50 field goals, was a testament to their “next man up” mentality and strong off-court bond.

Building a Special Culture

This improbable win, their eighth straight, speaks volumes about the culture Bickerstaff is building in Detroit. While the team sits atop the Eastern Conference standings, it’s the victories earned through adversity that forge a true contender’s identity.

Veteran Paul Reed highlighted the team’s togetherness, pointing to off-court activities as the source of their strong connection. “It’s kind of like a brotherhood at this point,” Reed said. “And that’s the biggest thing when it comes to us being together [in-sync] is off-the-court stuff.”

This win was more than just another notch in the standings; it was a validation of the team’s hard work, chemistry, and belief in one another, proving that even when shorthanded, the Pistons are a force to be reckoned with.
