Former NBA player Jim Jackson recently compared Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg to Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James. Here’s why Jackson, 54, set Flagg, 18, and James, 40, side by side.
Former NBAer Compares Cooper Flagg To LeBron James
Jackson compared Flagg to LeBron James in a recent interview with Mavs.com. Jackson’s recent statement is widely considered a great thing. James is a 21-time NBA All-Star and a four-time NBA champion over 14 NBA seasons.
Jackson said, “I think (Flagg’s) makeup is kind of like LeBron from the perspective of playmaking, even though he can dominate the game from scoring. The footwork, the shooting, all the attributes you look at a high-level player, he has it. But I just think his ability to connect with his teammates and be the ultimate team player is kind of what separated him and why he’ll be an outstanding fit with the Mavericks.”
Jackson, a lead color commentator for Fox Sports, covered Flagg a few times last season, while the latter played his lone season at Duke. Jackson’s observations of the then-Duke star were exceptional.
Cooper Flagg’s Outlook Entering Rookie Season
Flagg’s outlook entering his rookie season appears to be optimistic. Flagg has a chance to become one of the best NBA players for many years to come. The Dallas Mavericks’ No. 1 selection of Flagg is worthwhile. The Mavericks reportedly have plans for the 18-year-old to handle the ball and play on the floor alongside Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II. However, Flagg’s positive introduction to the NBA likely won’t be enough. The Mavericks’ goal should include redemption for Davis, 32, and Klay Thompson.
Final Thoughts
Flagg has a high basketball IQ, while reportedly being unselfish. Flagg’s positive qualities are good for the game of basketball. Flagg could help the Dallas Mavericks defensively due to his reported penchant for improving his skills as a defender.
