Green Bay Packers Running Out Of Room For Romeo Doubs

The Green Bay Packers face a looming offseason decision regarding wide receiver Romeo Doubs, and all signs point to a potential separation. Despite previous assurances from head coach Matt LaFleur and flashes of brilliance earlier in his career, Doubs’ long-term future in Green Bay appears increasingly uncertain as the team navigates a crowded receiver room and tightening financial constraints.

A Crowded Wide Receiver Room For The Green Bay Packers

The primary factor driving Doubs toward a potential exit is simply a numbers game. Green Bay’s depth at the wide receiver position has improved significantly, making Doubs less indispensable than he was just a season ago. The return to health and form of Christian Watson, coupled with the explosive playmaking ability of Jayden Reed, has pushed Doubs down the pecking order.

Recent performances underscore this shift. In the Packers’ Week 14 win over the Chicago Bears, Doubs was targeted just twice and failed to record a catch, running only 20 routes. Meanwhile, Watson scored two touchdowns, and Reed continued to be a focal point of the offense. With other young talents like Dontayvion Wicks showing potential and rookie Matthew Golden waiting in the wings, the Packers have an abundance of options that may make Doubs expendable.

Production Decline and Role Frustration

Romeo Doubs’ trajectory has been a roller coaster. While there were reports in October of a potential contract extension following a strong start, his production has dipped significantly over the last month. Advanced metrics paint a concerning picture, with Doubs averaging less than a yard per route run over his last five games.

This decline in efficiency comes on the heels of previous internal friction. In September 2024, Doubs served a one-game suspension related to frustration with his role in the offense. While the team moved past the incident publicly, the underlying issue—a desire for more targets in an offense designed to spread the ball around—remains a potential point of contention.

Financial Realities Force Tough Decisions

Beyond the depth chart, the financial aspect of roster construction looms large. The Packers have several key free agents to address in the coming years, and allocating significant cap space to a receiver who has fallen to the third or fourth option may not be feasible.

Doubs was reportedly eyeing a contract in the range of $15 million annually. While his recent slump might lower that price tag, it also raises the question of whether Green Bay would want to invest even a moderate amount in a player whose role is diminishing. Investing in rising stars like Reed and Watson likely takes priority, potentially leaving Doubs as the odd man out.

For Doubs, a change of scenery might be the best path forward to secure the volume and role he desires. For the Packers, moving on would allow them to reallocate resources to other areas of need while trusting their depth to fill the void. As the offseason approaches, an exit that once seemed unlikely now feels almost inevitable.
