Defensive Tackle Jonathan Allen will be released by the Washington Commanders. ESPN Insider Adam Schefter reported the news on Friday. The team was reportedly seeking to trade the star player this offseason, but with nothing coming to fruition, they released him. He was also nearly included in the blockbuster trade that saw Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel come to town. Allen was due $15.5 million in base salary this season. Washington saves $16.47 million in salary cap space with $6 million in dead money according to NFL Media.
Allen is coming off a disappointing season. He was limited to 8 games following a pectoral injury he suffered early in the season. He will look to regain his form from years past in a new uniform. Where will the star defensive tackle play in 2025?
Jonathan Allen Career Summary
Allen was the No. 17 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He is a two-time Pro Bowl selection. His career with the Washington Commanders ended with 401 total tackles and 42 sacks. He will be a hot commodity in free agency this year. A few of the teams that could use the former Pro Bowler are the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and the Green Bay Packers.
Final Thoughts
This move did not come as a surprise as Allen has consistently been on the chopping block this offseason. He is one of the best players at his position, and whatever team ends up with his services will be fortunate. After a disappointing season, the defensive tackle will be more motivated than ever to get back on track in 2025.
