In a game that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Arizona Wildcats pulled off a hard-fought 23-17 victory over Kansas State. The night belonged to Arizona Running Back Ismail Mahdi as he delivered a career-defining performance, racking up 189 rushing yards and 32 receiving yards, single-handedly igniting Arizona’s offense.

His ability to break tackles, find gaps, and deliver in critical moments made him the clear difference-maker. With Mahdi leading the charge, the Wildcats are now off to their first 3-0 start since 2015, solidifying his role as the heart of Arizona’s resurgence.

Mahdi Runs For An Eye-Popping 189 Yards

From the moment he touched the ball, it was clear this was Mahdi’s night. He had a spectacular 60-yard run early on, a blur of motion that set the tone for the entire game. But he wasn’t done. Time and again, when Arizona needed a spark, Mahdi delivered, with powerful runs of 34 and 15 yards that gashed the Kansas State defense. His 189 rushing yards were a testament to his sheer will and determination, the most by a Wildcat since 2022.

The game’s defining moment, however, came through the air. Facing a crucial third-and-15 in the fourth quarter, quarterback Noah Fifita dumped off a simple check-down pass. In Mahdi’s hands, it became a 27-yard dagger, a play that broke Kansas State’s spirit and kept a critical drive alive. On a night where every yard was a battle, Ismail Mahdi was the warrior who led the charge, his performance echoing through the stadium long after the final whistle blew.

Arizona’s Gritty Performance

  • Dual-Threat QB: Quarterback Noah Fifita kept the defense guessing, scoring two crucial rushing touchdowns.
  • Defensive Wall: The defense was relentless, holding Kansas State to a meager 193 total yards and getting a game-sealing fourth-down stop.
  • Key Stops: Genesis Smith led the defense with eight tackles and three pass breakups.
  • Offensive Control: Arizona dominated time of possession (36:20 to 23:40), wearing down the Kansas State defense throughout the game.
  • Special Teams Rollercoaster: Kicker Michael Salgado-Medina had a mixed night, going 3-for-6 on field goals, but a recovered muffed punt by Dalton Johnson provided a key opportunity.
  • Historic Start: The win marks Arizona’s first 3-0 start in nine years, building major momentum for the team.

Kansas State’s Fight To the Finish

  • Brown’s Big Play: Wide receiver Jayce Brown ignited the second half with a stunning 75-yard touchdown run out of a direct snap.
  • Defensive Playmaker: Linebacker Qua Moss snagged Kansas State’s first interception of the season, halting an Arizona trick play.
  • Special Teams Spark: Garrett Harstad blocked a punt, extending Kansas State’s nation-leading streak to eight consecutive seasons with a blocked punt.
  • Big Leg: Kicker Luis Rodriguez boomed a career-long 51-yard field goal.
  • First Half Shutdown: The defense was impenetrable early on, allowing only 44 total yards in the entire first half.
  • Passing Struggles: Quarterback Avery Johnson was held in check, managing just 88 passing yards against a swarming Arizona secondary.
  • Third-Down Woes: Kansas State’s offense struggled to sustain drives, converting on just 3 of 17 combined third- and fourth-down attempts.
