The Mariners beat the Yankees 2-1 in Seattle on Monday Night. The outcome proves the old adage that good pitching beats good hitting every time. Seattle might have a better starting pitching rotation than the New York Yankees when fully healthy, and that is scary.
The Yankees wanted to acquire the Seattle starting pitcher, Luis Castillo, via trade, and his performance last night proves why. He is great, and he is Seattle’s fifth starting pitcher. Do you think that Seattle is the leading contender to win the American League pennant?
Yankees and Seattle Mariners Soring Summary
There was not much scoring in this game between the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees. Castillo was exceptional. The scoring summary is easy to write. Here it is:
In the second inning, Cole Young singled, and Randy Arozarena scored. The Yankees tied the game at one on an Ahed Rosario sacrifice fly, which scored Ben Rice. That happened in the seventh inning. Then came the ninth-inning walk-off single for Cal Raleigh. The Mariners won the game 2-1. That was the final score of the game.
Player Of the Game
The player of the game was Luis Castillo. He pitched six scoreless innings. He struck out seven Yankees and only walked two. Honorable mention for the Mariners is the “Big Dumper,” Cal Raleigh, who hit a walk-off single. For the Yankees, all the pitchers pitched well.
They were Ryan Weathers, Fernando Cruz, Jake Bird, Brent Headrick, and Paul Blackburn, who gave up the game-winning hit. Honorable mention for the Yankees was Giancarlo Stanton, who was 2-of-4 with a double in the game.
Turning Point
As the game was 1-1 heading into the ninth inning, the turning point of the game came on Raleigh’s walk-off single. It is noteworthy because Raleigh has gotten off to a terrible start to the season. As a matter of fact, he struck out when he pinch-hit in the seventh inning. At any rate, the single was a walk-off; it was the last play of the game.
In an odd twist, many of the players who played for the United States in the World Baseball Classic are struggling. The slow start of Raliegh is a case in point, though he is far from the only one who got off to a bad start. He did not hit in the World Baseball Classic. So, maybe the hit will get him going.
