The New York Islanders have seen better seasons throughout their history in the NHL. With a tragic start to the 2024-2025 NHL season, it only gets worse from here. Mathew Barzal, star center for the Islanders, has been placed on long-term injured reserve due to an upper-body injury and is expected to be absent for 4-6 weeks.

Mathew Barzal Career

A first-round pick for the New York Islanders in 2015, the 27-year-old Canadian has had quite an impressive journey to the professional league. Barzal spent some time in the WHL where he gained title after title. He was named WHL West First All-Star Team (2016, 2017), WHL Playoff MVP (2017), and earned quite a few achievements in his early NHL career. He made the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2018 and played in the NHL All-Star Game in 2019, 2020, and 2024.

The Islander’s Luck Has Officially Ran Out

The New York Islanders have had big issues to begin the 2024-2025 NHL season. Mathew Barzal has led the team in power play minutes (3:42). Mathew Barzal is one of the more impactful players on New York’s roster and has shown his reliability for years. He led the Islanders in points (85) and assists (63) won the Calder Trophy, and was voted the top rookie in the NHL in 2017 – 2018. The New York Islanders announced last night that the top-line star returned to Long Island to seek medical evaluation and that a time frame would be announced post-evaluation.

Islanders Lose Their Life Raft

The loss of Mathew Barzal arguably could not have come at a more inconvenient time for the New York Islanders. Currently standing at 4-5-1, the Islanders have barely kept their heads above water thus far. The Islanders already had a few injured players early in the season, such as Adam Pelech. With the star now on LTIR (long-term injured reserve), it is unclear what will become of the once-great hockey club in terms of their performance this season.
