The New York Yankees have finalized their major league coaching staff for the 2026 season, promoting from within to fill a key vacancy. The team has named Dan Fiorito as its new first base coach, replacing Travis Chapman, who was let go earlier in the offseason.
A Familiar Face For The New York Yankees
For the Yankees, the hiring of Fiorito represents a commitment to continuity and rewarding homegrown talent. Fiorito, 35, is a New York native with deep roots in the organization. After a four-year playing career as an infielder in the Yankees’ minor league system, advancing as high as Triple-A, he transitioned to coaching and has been rising through the ranks ever since.
His coaching journey has given him a comprehensive understanding of the franchise’s player development system. He has served as a minor league manager at multiple levels, including stints with the Florida Coast League Yankees and the Hudson Valley Renegades.
A Track Record of Developing Talent
Fiorito’s most notable success as a manager came in 2022, when he guided the Double-A Somerset Patriots to an Eastern League championship. His work that season earned him Eastern League Manager of the Year honors. More importantly, he played a direct role in the development of several key players who are now contributing at the major league level, including Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, and Austin Wells.
His experience shepherding these young players through the minors gives him a unique familiarity and level of trust with the Yankees’ emerging core. Most recently, Fiorito has worked as a roving minor-league infield and outfield coordinator, further broadening his expertise in player instruction.
Finalizing Boone’s Staff
Fiorito’s promotion completes manager Aaron Boone’s staff for the upcoming season. The decision to hire from within, rather than bringing in an external candidate like former big leaguer Ryan Goins, underscores the organization’s confidence in its internal pipeline of coaches. This move, along with the return of assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel, solidifies a staff that aims to build on its recent successes and pursue another championship. For the Yankees, elevating a respected, longtime organizational member like Fiorito is a move that reinforces stability and a shared philosophy from the minor leagues to the majors.
