Nigel Mansell Challenges Lando Norris to Lead McLaren’

Formula One world champion Nigel Mansell from 1992 has given his two cents on McLaren’s choice of supporting Lando Norris in this year’s championship. It is now high time for Norris to rise to the challenge. It has fueled debates that McLaren has favored the British driver over his teammate Oscar Piastri this year as Norris currently lies 59 points behind Max Verstappen.

Lando Norris in Azerbaijan

From the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Lando Norris had proved his championship mettle when he charged through the ranks from 17th on the grid to fourth at the checkered flag. This is one of the best achievements to enable Norris to close the gap with current title holder Max Verstappen to within 59 points. Nigel Mansell stressed that this year’s championship battle will depend on Norris’ performance and the latter’s ability to score points.

While the spotlight has been on Norris, his teammate Oscar Piastri has been enjoying a super year. Piastri won his second F1 career race, defeating Ferrari’s Leclerc and thus reducing the gap in the standings between him and Norris even more. McLaren did not hesitate to give full confidence to Norris for the rest of the season.

Nigel Mansell’s Take on Mclaren’s Strategy

Speaking to Crash in an interview, Nigel Mansell talked about McLaren’s choice to favor Norris. He pointed out that Norris himself had established the ability to drive under performance pressure and the intent of doing justice on merit.

He further emphasizes the cut-throat competition that is in the off-season within McLaren’s garage. Meanwhile, Piastri has shown that he can deliver, Nigel Mansell thinks Norris needs to show that he is faster than his team-mate in the race consistently if he is to be in contention for the title.

Piastri’s Role in a Potential Norris Title Bid

Nigel Mansell also stressed that Oscar Piastri could become a decisive factor for McLaren, Norris, and winning the championship; similar to Perez in the 2021 Red Bull team. The seasoned driver pointed out that while many people are against team instructions adding complexity to the game is not bad. He referenced past instances, such as when Lewis Hamilton deployed similar tactics against rivals, illustrating how strategic teamwork can turn the tide of a championship.

McLaren’s Professional Approach

He praised McLaren for making the decisive move to back Norris, calling their approach “incredibly professional.” In his view, McLaren currently boasts one of the best cars on the grid, giving them a strong shot at both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. Mansell said the following in his interview.

“If someone’s winning the race and your teammate’s in third, then that’s a strong call to give the race win away, Mansell explained. But if you do that because you can still win the championship, you do it. It’s a race-by-race situation.”

However, he cautioned that situations involving other drivers, particularly Verstappen, could complicate team orders. He pointed to the complexities McLaren might face shortly in executing team strategy in the final season.

Conclusion

As McLaren focuses on supporting Lando Norris for the remainder of the season, the spotlight is on the British driver to prove he can challenge Verstappen for the title. With Oscar Piastri performing at a high level, McLaren’s strategy will need to be fine-tuned on a race-by-race basis. Nigel Mansell’s assessment adds another layer of anticipation to McLaren’s campaign, with Norris under pressure to “step up” and deliver for his team.
