Pitching in the modern era usually involves a parade of relievers, a spreadsheet full of analytics, and a starter waving the white flag around the fifth inning. But every now and then, a guy takes the mound and decides he’s just not going to share the baseball. Today, that guy was Sandy Alcantara.
In a masterpiece that looked more like a video game on rookie difficulty than an MLB game, Alcantara dismantled the Chicago White Sox. He didn’t just beat them; he sent them packing in a brisk, 93-pitch complete-game shutout to secure a 10-0 victory for the Miami Marlins.
The Rare and Elusive Maddux
If you are a baseball purist, you know exactly what a “Maddux” is. Named after the legendary Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, it is a complete-game shutout thrown in fewer than 100 pitches. It is the pitching equivalent of hitting a hole-in-one while blindfolded. Alcantara notched his second career Maddux in this gem, proving once again why he took home the 2022 NL Cy Young Award.
He struck out seven, surrendered a measly three singles, and hit one batter just to remind the White Sox they were actually awake and not trapped in a recurring nightmare. Alcantara pushed his current scoreless streak to an impressive 15 innings. He was efficient, ruthless, and, honestly, a joy to watch. It was his 13th career complete game, making him a true unicorn in an era of heavy bullpen usage.
Run Support For Alcantara
You have to feel a little bad for the White Sox pitchers, who had to watch Alcantara paint the corners while their own stat lines went up in flames. The Marlins‘ offense decided to throw a massive party to back up their ace.
Liam Hicks played the role of chief tormentor, launching a home run, knocking two singles, and driving in four runs. Otto López decided to join the home run parade, going deep himself, while Graham Pauley smacked a pair of doubles. When your ace is dealing like Alcantara was, scoring 10 runs almost feels greedy. But in baseball, you take what you can get.
Marlins Riding High
This wasn’t just a fun afternoon at loanDepot park; it was a statement. With the win, the Marlins wrapped up their homestand with a sparkling 5-1 record, marking their best start to a season since 2020.
When Alcantara pitches like this, Miami isn’t just a fun team to watch—they are a legitimate problem for the rest of the league. Let’s just hope the White Sox managed to get some ice on their bruised egos before the flight home.
