Pittsburgh Pirates Starting Pitcher Paul Skenes experienced something all too familiar this afternoon on the road against the Chicago Cubs. He walked away with a no-decision following another masterful outing. He tossed five scoreless innings and punched out five. Pittsburgh prevailed 2-1 in 10 innings. It has been a great season for the star pitcher. He is 4-6 with a 1.78 ERA. He is fifth in the league in ERA and third in WHIP.
He has the sixth-lowest ERA through 15 starts in age 23 or younger season since 1969. He is behind all-time greats like Dwight Gooden and Vida Blue. Skenes also has the fewest wins(4) by any pitcher with a sub-2 ERA through 15 starts since 1920. Will the young ace continue pitching this well?
Paul Skenes Career Summary
Skenes has taken Major League Baseball by storm since making his debut last season. In his rookie year, he was named an MLB All-Star, named Rookie of the Year, and finished third in National League Cy Young voting. Before making his MLB debut, he was the No. 1 pitching prospect in the league. Coming into the league he was heavily hyped. It is safe to say he has lived up to it thus far.
Final Thoughts
The next scheduled start for Skenes is scheduled to come on the road against the Detroit Tigers on June 19. Pittsburgh’s ace is pitching as well as any starting pitcher, but it is not translating to wins. He will look to keep up his production hoping wins will follow.
