Los Angeles Dodgers Designated Hitter Shohei Ohtani has had a historic first 80 games of the regular season. He has 28 home runs and 6 triples through his first 80 games of the season. The last player in the league to reach these marks through the first 80 games of a campaign was Willie Mays in 1954.
Following an NL MVP Award in 2024, Ohtani has not missed a beat halfway through this season. He is second in the league in home runs, third in OPS, and seventh in OBP. He has also made two starts on the mound this season as he continues to ramp up that part of his game. Will the international icon continue making history this summer?

Ohtani’s success both at the plate and the mound is unprecedented. It has parallels to what Babe Ruth did approximately a century ago. Ohtani has taken the league by storm ever since coming over from Japan in 2018. He is a four-time MLB All-Star, three-time MVP, and three-time Silver Slugger, and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series last season. He also has a top-five finish in Cy Young voting.
Final Thoughts
Ohtani and the Dodgers return to the diamond this evening on the road against the Kansas City Royals. The Japanese phenom is expected to take the mound tomorrow afternoon as he looks to build up his stamina on the mound.
